Competency Based Learning
This new school year brings a change to Competency Based Learning and Assessment at all levels in the Rochester School District. This is great news especially in music. Now instead of one generic grade many meaningful marks will be given showing where each child shines or needs growth. The word competency simply means "what can I do?" and we will now add "to what extent can I do it?"

Elementary General Music Competencies
The follow is an outline of our Rochester Elementary Music Grading Rubric. You will see there are three basic competencies. Each term your child will be given a grade for each of the three. We developed those competencies in alignment with the Nation Music Standards (listed below) to ensure the most quality teaching and learning opportunities could be possible. We then developed the rubric to assess the development of your child's learning experience. A grade for each competency will be given as per the grade level expectations. As the child gets older expectations will increase. This system works beautifully in the music classroom as music learning is a process without end. We all continue to learn and experience music in new and different ways as we continue to grow and change as human beings.
