This week we took a final look at the film scores of John Williams. A film score is music for a movie. American composer and conductor John Williams has scored more than 100 films, including 'Jaws,' six 'Star Wars' movies, 'E.T.' and the first three 'Harry Potter' films. John Williams has been nominated for 49 Academy Awards and won 5 of them. This week we watched the "flying scene" from ET first without music and then with music. We described the ways that music enhanced our
ability to understand and be part of the action in the movie. The triangle roll and crescendo before they go off the cliff especially added to our emotional connection. John Williams has a talent for choosing the perfect sounds for each part of a movie!
We discovered that it is much more fun to "show what we know" through movement than to do a worksheet or written assessment. We also used a parachute to show the form of "Star Wars Theme." Many students tell me that we could do that everyday of music for the rest of the year and they would be very happy. It was so much fun!!!
Abigail and Ava wrote a great sound story!!!
Two 2nd graders Abigail and Ava worked together during music class to write and perform a sound story called "In the Tall Tall Grass. They read the story, explored instruments, used a graphic organized and rehearsed all on their own! Way to go girls! Check out the very first performance of their story to the left.
Doing this kind of process enables children to explore both concrete and abstract thinking together. It motivates them to synthesize what they read in a different way than if they were asked what each word meant. They explored vocabulary with different senses and had a blast doing it!

Happy music making everyone!!!
to/watching him conduct music from Jurassic Park. Many students learned that John Williams is one of their favorite composers as he wrote the music to Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Hook, and Star Wars all fan favorites of elementary age children.
