Student Learning on the up and up and up and up!!!
All students have been working towards our goal of learning 20 American songs by the end of the year! We started strong with "This Land is Your Land" and then moved onto "Brother John".
Brother John
All students have been exposed to the Genre Minimalism. This is our genre of the month for September.
Composers were:
John Adams- Short Ride on a Fast Machine
Phillip Glass- Mishima
Steve Reich- Different Trains
We especially focused on the idea that ostinatos organized together make a song. Minimalism is a challenging concept to explore but I think the kids gained a lot by exploring this kind of music.
All students have been exposed to rhythm reading in simple 4/4 time.
I will be sending home the assessment from our first unit soon. We will be assessing starting Wednesday!
BY THE GRADE:
Grade 5 has been exploring Beethoven life and work 9th Symphony. The are learning the final on boomwhackers. You might recognize the melody- It is "Ode to Joy.'
Grade 4 is learning the old classic Alabama Gal playing accompaniments on numerous glockenspiels, metalophones, and xylophones. They will continue this lesson by learning the folk partner dance Alabama Gal soon!
Grade 3 has begun their study of ukulele. They have learned the parts of the instrument, how to strum, and a C chord. We learn how to accompany our first song while we sing!
Grade 2 is strengthening their "SUPER MUSICIAN" powers: Rapid Rhythm, GammaRay Note Reader, Soul Striking Singing, Destroy the Dance Floor Dance, Power Performer, Sonic Listening Ears. We have learned a song and dance "Hungry to Learn."
Grade 1 has met a new friend Freddie the Frog and he is helping kiddos learn all about the staff, treble clef and all of the lines and spaces.
