We have been taking a look at the Civil Rights movement in class. Such topics as kindness, character and justice have stirred up some of our countries most beautiful and beloved songs! This week we sang "We Shall Overcome" in hopes that we will remember to treat each other kindly as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has taught the world. Here is another song for you to sing! Can you figure out the tune?
If you are looking for a video or song we did in class check out this link here or go to the "Inside Music Class" tab and click :class media and fun."
As many of you know I have been working very hard this year to provide new opportunities for my students. With tight budgets everywhere the money for these opportunities is not always available. My music classroom is so fortunate to have received numerous donations this year through an organization called donorschoose.org! We have received 17 soprano ukuleles, 10 home ukulele kits (with cases, tuners and extra strings), a Recording King Banjolele (a banjo and ukulele hybrid), a pineapple ukulele, a baritone ukulele, a new rug, and a digital piano! WOW! These wonderful additions would not be possible without the generous giving from many people in our community (including some sweet family members - Thanks especially to Mom and Dad Pedrick!) and from complete strangers who give because they believe music education is so very important! If you would like to give to our music classroom you can follow the above link and check out our new projects at Donors Choose. Thanks again so much to all who give to education! This year's Christmas Spectacular for both McClelland School and Gonic School was amazing! The kids worked so hard to put our show together and their dedication really shined at each concert! I was also very impressed with how smoothly arrival and dismissal was at each event. Thanks to the parents and teachers for following procedure- it really helped keep everything flowing and safe. A big shout out to the staff at both schools for singing, dancing and acting with the kids this year! They loved it... I could tell you did as well. ;-) I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!!! Great job everyone! McClelland School's is Monday December 16th at 7pm @ RMS Gonic School's is Tuesday December 17th at 7pm @ RMS
We have officially begun our preparation for our Winter Musical: Christmas Spectacular. It is a secular play about the 400th North Pole Christmas Show and Santa is having trouble putting it all together. He can't complete the closing number. Auditions are underway and everyone is in a panic! The dancing Reindeer are want a big dance number but don't know what to do with Rudolph and his 4 left hooves. The elves are tired of always getting the short end of the stick, and are singin' the blues. The snowmen are worried about the funky hot lights, and the toys are trying to do the entire Nutcracker Suite in 3 minutes! The annual Christmas show keeps getting bigger and bigger, but, is bigger really better? See how Santa finds a way to remind everyone of the true meaning of the season.
For the lyrics to all of our songs click HERE. Each child was given a cd to practice with at home. All friends, family, and loved ones are encouraged to come support these wonderful children in their musical review. Student Learning on the up and up and up and up!!!All students have been working towards our goal of learning 20 American songs by the end of the year! We started strong with "This Land is Your Land" and then moved onto "Brother John". Brother JohnAll students have been exposed to the Genre Minimalism. This is our genre of the month for September.
Composers were: John Adams- Short Ride on a Fast Machine Phillip Glass- Mishima Steve Reich- Different Trains We especially focused on the idea that ostinatos organized together make a song. Minimalism is a challenging concept to explore but I think the kids gained a lot by exploring this kind of music. All students have been exposed to rhythm reading in simple 4/4 time. I will be sending home the assessment from our first unit soon. We will be assessing starting Wednesday! BY THE GRADE: Grade 5 has been exploring Beethoven life and work 9th Symphony. The are learning the final on boomwhackers. You might recognize the melody- It is "Ode to Joy.' Grade 4 is learning the old classic Alabama Gal playing accompaniments on numerous glockenspiels, metalophones, and xylophones. They will continue this lesson by learning the folk partner dance Alabama Gal soon! Grade 3 has begun their study of ukulele. They have learned the parts of the instrument, how to strum, and a C chord. We learn how to accompany our first song while we sing! Grade 2 is strengthening their "SUPER MUSICIAN" powers: Rapid Rhythm, GammaRay Note Reader, Soul Striking Singing, Destroy the Dance Floor Dance, Power Performer, Sonic Listening Ears. We have learned a song and dance "Hungry to Learn." Grade 1 has met a new friend Freddie the Frog and he is helping kiddos learn all about the staff, treble clef and all of the lines and spaces. |
